About Julian Maier-Hauff, Solo (Live):

Julian Maier-Hauff, analog electronic, playful, acoustic and above all: LIVE. As one of the few in the electronic music scene, Julian Maier-Hauff's sounds are exclusively improvised and every audible sound is created in the moment.

Maier-Hauff has been experimenting with sounds for years. With his background in improvised instrumental music, he transfers the system of free playing to the electronic sound apparatus. Without computers or prepared tracks, the solo artist transforms the sensations of the moment directly into grooves and pieces enriched by the lively sound of acoustic instruments.

Trumpet, saxophone and trombone contrast with analog electronics and blend perfectly into the overall sound. Julian Maier-Hauff plays with the depth of fictional spaces, combines spherical elements with driving patterns, crystalline sounds with filigree melodies.

The sound apparatus moves without interruption from one theme to the next until the last note has faded away.

Liveact

In electronic music everything is allowed - as long as it works. In my improvised live sets I combine organic sounds from analog synthesizers and drum machines with trumpet, saxophone or trombone. No computer, no pre-produced tracks - the focus is on the creative moment and the musical dialogue with myself and the listeners. Each set is unique.

PRODUCER & SOUND ENGINEER

Producing, recording and mixing - After I took over the sessions for internal university projects as a research assistant in the university studio of the HfM Mannheim in 2013 and attended the lectures of Daniel Dettwiler (Idee & Klang, Basel), I worked as a sound engineer in the CitySoundStudio and at Back Yard Mastering. I mixed, mastered and produced both for my own productions (radio and release) and as an external service provider. In 2020, I completed my master's degree in Music Production and Composition (M.A. Producing Composing Artist) at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. The hybrid of digital and analog studio technology in combination with a balanced room sound and a calibrated studio monitor system enables professional, organic results in production, mixing and mastering.

The studio, optimized for mixing and production, is located in Mannheim, Käfertal.

I am regularly employed as an external lecturer for mixing, sound design or production at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg for bachelor as well as master students.

The Studio

The place with the focus on creativity. Ideal conditions for mixing, mastering and recording.

The studio consists of two adjacent rooms with different focuses. One of them is optimized for mixing, mastering and is rather acoustically dry.

The second room is primarily designed as a production studio and recording space.

It is jointly run by Julian Maier-Hauff (founder of the studio), Flo Huth, Malte Appel and Simon Seeleuther.

Session Musician

I love being the one-man brass section. The advantage of a solo section is that it springs from one person's sonic imagination. Harmonic interplay, perfect blending, adjusted intonation and congruent phrasing are easy to achieve in the overdub process. A compelling selection of high-quality preamps and transducers is complemented by a collection of microphones typical of wind recordings. I like to use my Coles ribbon microphone and a Telefunken preamp for a warm, round and punchy sound. Lo-fi horns or gritty session horns I achieve by using dynamic mics. Hi-Fi through ribbon or condenser microphones - if necessary also in combination.

Slight variations in mic placement, playing style, position and setup make the set wide and lively. I can record very acoustically dry in my studio, or use live rooms if productions require appropriate spaces. For orchestral pop sets or one-man big band recordings, I like to work with composer and arranger Konrad Hinsken (Sing meinen Song, Staatsphilharmonie RLP, etc.).

Possible instruments are:

Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone and Flugelhorn.

One Man Brass Section for

Mine, Sascha, Samy Deluxe, Fatoni & Edgar Wasser, Yvonne Catterfeld, San Miguel, Xiaomi, Roger Cicero, Listentojules, Jules Ahoy, Mahlukat, Shkoon, Viva Con Aqua, Aurel Mertz, productions of SWR, Persian Empire, and many more.

EDUCATION

Sharing knowledge and experience has always been natural for me. Fortunately, I have always been curious enough to educate myself, to deal with challenges and to try out alternative solutions. For every problem there is at least one solution - and many problems can be seen as opportunities. Especially since mistakes in the artistic field don't hurt, but are necessary in order to develop further.

Motivating people to try things out and giving them the tools to develop themselves is very important to me.

As a workshop lecturer, speaker and tutor I have worked for the following institutions in the field of music education as well as sound design, electronic music production and improvisation:

Philharmonie Luxembourg, junges Nationaltheater Mannheim, junge norddeutsche philharmonie, Beirut Design Week, Tempel Karlsruhe (funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg), etc.

As an external lecturer I regularly give seminars on sound design (analog/digital), mixing, music production and recording at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg for bachelor and master students.

Project Management & Concept

As part of my work for the cultural urban development of the city of Mannheim, I have expanded my experience in project management and the conception of participatory cultural projects. My experience from the perspective of a cultural worker has helped me a lot in planning projects realistically. All the projects I have conceived so far have been successfully implemented. This is only possible with a strong team, sufficient resources and enough support in the cultural scene. For example, the Zwischenzeitfestival (2021), which was planned and conceived in just a few weeks, or the 1st Mannheim Street Art Festival with over 100 musicians involved could be realized together with Thomas Woschitz and Stefan Wandel. As part of my self-employed work, I continue to pursue projects that provide access to culture and strengthen community and identity.
